Behaviour Modification Process

Warrior, a young dog that was suffering from undiagnosed pain which caused him to show aggression towards people and excessive reactivity on a lead to people, dogs and traffic.

He is now able to attend training classes, greet and socialise with dogs and with careful introductions can welcome new people into his home.

Dogs may develop behaviour problems for a variety of reasons. As behaviourists its our job to discover what the underlying motivations and emotions behind the behave so we can then address the root cause. Often these problems are excessive versions of normal dog behaviour. Therefore, it is our job to help you get this behaviour back under control so it presents itself in a more manageable and appropriate way!

Some examples of behaviours you may like help with are:

  • Separation related problems (chewing, howling, barking, toileting etc when left alone)

  • Excessive barking in the home

  • Lunging and barking towards other dogs, people or traffic

  • Hyperactivity

  • Toileting in the home (dog is no longer a puppy)

  • Destructiveness

  • Aggression towards people (please Click Here for more information on this as we work slightly differently with these cases)

To help with behaviour problems we will take you through the below steps:

Step 1

  • Book a behaviour assessment with Natalie (Head Behaviourist, qualified to Masters degree level)

    • For some problems you may only be given the option of Natalie to ensure you get the trainer that has the relevant experience for that particular issue.

  • Upon booking you will receive a booking email with a behaviour questionnaire to fill in and a form for your vet to sign.

    • We work alongside your vets to ensure that if we feel anything medical could be exacerbating the problem we can get you the full help you need.

  • The behaviour assessment includes the following:

    • Collection of history about the dog (from yourself and your vet)

    • Assess them in the home environment and on a walk (if necessary).

    • A summary of your dogs behaviour so you can understand why your dog is behaving this way and look at the underlying motivations and emotions so we can address the problem from the root cause.

    • A management plan to prevent it from getting worse

    • The initial stages of training required

    • An email full of notes and resources to help you remember everything from the assessment.

    • Support via phone or email in-between your sessions

  • Prices:

    • With Natalie - £150

Step 2

  • Natalie will come out to your home or meet you at an agreed location to conduct the assessment.

  • The assessment will take up to 1.5hrs

  • We will start the assessment with asking you further questions about you and your dog’s current situation.

  • Once all questions have been answered we will observe your dog in the home and on a walk.

  • We will begin implementing advise as we go through this process.

  • The key aims of this assessment is to understand fully what is happening, put in place management so the dog doesn’t keep practicing the behaviour and then provide you with your first steps of training.

Step 3

Our last job is to advise what you do going forward and give you an approximate prognosis (how long we think it may take to get to a certain goal).

We may advise more follow up sessions or may have a class we feel your dog will be suited to.

Follow up sessions are done in packages. In some rare cases we may offer just one follow up sessions but you are likely going to need more than 1. We will advise on which package we feel you may need.

For some cases you’ll be offered either Natalie or Katie to support you with your ongoing training.
